Chapter Nine

Time continued to slip by, to lapse, and, eventually, I relaxed into him again and drifted off to sleep.

When I awoke,the first thing that registered was that it was nighttime.

I blinked profusely, looking at the sliver of moon visible through the peek in between the curtains.

The next thing was that I was alone, a blanket draped over my naked form. Flashes of hours ago flickered in my mind, bringing a smile to my lips. Wes had been wonderful.

I stopped myself, slipping out of bed. My heart clenched at the sight of my clothes folded neatly at the base of the bed. He’d lined my shoes up in front of the footboard. I swallowed hard, pushing past his thoughtfulness. By the light of the moon, I dressed, leaving my socks and shoes behind.

The moment I opened the bedroom door, he looked straight at me from the couch. He sat in his cargo shorts, one light on and nothing to entertain him. His phone lay atop the coffee table, untouched, the screen black.

A minute of awkward quiet passed, until I couldn’t handle the lack of resolution. I crossed the room and plopped down on the other end of the sofa. The clock on the cable box read 12:01 a.m.

He didn’t take his eyes off of me. Straightening, he cleared his throat. “Kelly’s sleeping in the guestroom, but I can take you home now if you want.”

I couldn’t recall a time he had ever sounded unsure of himself.

…until now.

He’d driven my car. Technically, I could leave anytime I wanted, no chauffer needed, but I couldn’t bring myself to walk out. A part of me wanted to throw myself at him. My spirit was restless; my heart felt heavy in my chest cavity. “Do you mind if I stay a bit?” I held my breath, waiting.

His lips curled wistfully upwards. “Stay as long as you want, sweetie.” Standing, he snatched the remote off of the entertainment center and passed it to me before dropping back into his seat.

The device felt weighty in my palms. I touched it with both hands, balancing it between them. “I’m sorry.” I glimpsed sideways at him.

He considered me for a long bit. “I know.”

There was nothing more I could give him, nothing more I could say or do. Guilt rode me roughly. I’d hurt him, and I would have to live with that. Forever.

A week away from Thanksgiving, several channels were already showing Christmas movies. I bypassed them in favor of an episode of Golden Girls, hoping it would lift my mood.

An hour and a half and three episodes later, I felt worse, my emotions having festered and compounded. I cared about him so much. I…I loved him. I wanted to love him every day and every night, but those stretches of time without him would wreck me. I wouldn’t be able to function, in constant fear of the past repeating itself.

Leaping up, I tugged down on my shirt. I couldn’t sit here anymore. “I’m going to head home.
